"E noho rā, Tāmaki Makaurau." As we bid farewell to Auckland, let's start this Grand Kiwi adventure heading southeast towards Coromandel, known for its pristine beaches and the famous Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve. This afternoon, experience the breathtaking natural rock formation at Cathedral Cove. Go on a short walk to explore the cove by foot or embark on an ocean adventure and get the best of both worlds. Hop aboard the Hahei Explorer and explore the area by boat OR if you feel like putting some effort in, Cathedral Cove Kayaks is the perfect option too.
If the tides are right we will head to Hot Water Beach in the afternoon so you can dig your own natural spa and relax in the hot geothermal water, before heading around the corner to Hahei to spend the evening. Hahei is a gorgeous beach town famed for its spectacular, pink sandy beach. Go for a sunset swim or grab a bite to eat before winding down for the night.
Leaving the gorgeous Coromandel behind, we start our journey to the magical underground world of Waitomo. En route, explore the Karangahake Gorge, located at the base of the Coromandel Range. This Historic Walkway follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi and offers an impressive glimpse into the remains of a once-booming gold mining and railway era.
Back aboard the bus, we continue south to Waitomo. In Māori, 'wai' means water, and 'tomo' means hole. Waitomo is more than caves and glowworms; it's a cultural hub rich in Māori history, myths and legends. Some of the cave guides are descendants of Chief Tane Tinorau, the original explorer of the caves. You'll have the opportunity to explore the incredible formations and marvel at the glowworms inside the Ruakuri cave on a 90 minute tour. Feeling adventurous? Opt to head underground with the Legendary Black Water Rafting Company and UPGRADE to the Black Labyrnith tour OR Black Abyss tour; jump off underground waterfalls, and enjoy millions of glowworms lighting your way as you float down an underground river.
There is no better way to start the day than by walking in nature, and Ruakuri Reserve offers the perfect morning walk. This spectacular loop highlights the sculpted cliffs and low limestone arches unique to the Waitomo area. As we bid farewell to Waitomo, let us venture into the heart of the Mighty Waikato region, where we will explore the lush pastures of the Shire™ with a guided walking tour of Hobbiton™, as featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies.

Sneak into darkness and see if you can spot one of these native birds in their purpose built nocturnal homes.

This afternoon will immerse you in the traditions and cultural values of the Māori people as we overnight at Te Pā Tū Māori Village, embracing Kaitiakitanga (interaction with the natural world) and Manaakitanga (hospitality and so much more). Learn about Māori history and culture through performances and enjoy traditional seasonal kai (meal). Afterwards, gather around a blazing bonfire where you will enjoy Māori myths and legends before retiring for the night in a traditional sleeping house.

Taupō is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and wonder centred on a vast, sparkling lake formed from a volcanic eruption that is the largest fresh water lake in Australiasia. Along the way, we will make a stop at Huka Falls to witness 220,000 litres of water per second travelling down the 11m waterfall. There is also a short walk here to enjoy.

If you’re looking for an additional adventure, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the Tasman Glacier by helicopter or take a scenic flight through Mt Cook National Park (Aoraki) (optional extras). Queenstown, thanks for the memories; as we bid farewell, Today's first stop is Arrowtown, where history meets nature. The Wānaka township’s position upon the Lake offers an Instagram-worthy view. In the afternoon you have the option of completing the Roys Peak track, a 5-6 hour hike with breathtaking views of Lake Wanaka, or the Mount Iron track for those looking for a shorter option (weather and time dependent). We will finish the day at Lake Hawea, about a 15-minute drive from Wanaka.
We start the day with a refreshing walk through native forest to the pristine waters of the Blue Pools, before continuing on through Haast pass which offers plenty of insta-worthy photo opportunities. In the afternoon we take you on a walk around Lake Matheson - known for its perfect mirror reflection of Aoraki Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. The waters of Lake Matheson are dark brown, so on a calm day they create the ideal reflective surface, and by a happy coincidence, the mountains to the east are perfectly positioned to reflect in the lake. Afterwards, we cruise onwards to Franz Josef. You’ll have two days here to unwind in Rainforest Retreat and visit the Franz Josef glacier.
Incredible Franz Josef sits in the world heritage area, and the combination of alpine scenery and west coast rainforest makes for an epic setting for your free day. Immerse yourself in a unique opportunity today - carving your own Pounamu (Greenstone) jewellery (included). You’ll learn more about the cultural significance of pounamu as you engage in this authentic cultural experience and depart with your own special piece of Aotearoa New Zealand.
You’ll then get to explore the Franz Josef glacier, an ever-changing landscape of ice. Opt for the Heli-Hike adventure, allowing you to walk on top of the glacier itself. For a free option, walk through the rainforest to a viewing area where the icy wonderland lies just 750m away.
On the final day of your Grand Kiwi Experience, we travel from coast to coast right over the Southern Alps on the world-famous Tranzalpine Train (included). This incredibly scenic train journey will take you through breathtaking New Zealand scenery, through the aqua-blue river of the Waimakariri Gorge, over bridges and viaducts and past magnificent mountain landscapes.
You'll arrive in Christchurch in the late afternoon, where it’s time to bid a fond farewell to the companions who have become your new lifelong friends throughout this incredible journey. Ka kite anō!
Our Small Group Tours offer a fixed itinerary, with a few bucket list items included. There are plenty of additional activities you can add on to your experience as you travel.
I really enjoyed this tour, thank you so much!
Fortunately, we had two guides this time and they were so kind, friendly and well-informed :) Activities included were awesome! Experiences about Maori were especially interesting for me. If there is someone who wants to go to the north Island, I’ll surely recommend joining this tour!! Thanks to Arias, Ahu, the crew and KiwiExperience, this trip has become a great memory for me ;)
It was a perfect way to spend a quick tour in the South Island
I was a bit hesitant about joining a group tour because I was alone (and introverted) and don't know anything, and there were some not-so-good reviews. But i dint really wanna spend so much renting a car alone (plus it'd be tiring to drive alone) so I opted to book it. It was a very pleasant experience from day 1 to finish. I met the group in Christchurch, although they have already started the tour from north island. They were mostly solo travelers as well, and everyone was respectful of each other. I actually made good friends with some after the trip (and was a bit sad when we parted).
Step out of your comfort zone and do things I would have never considered
Small Groups allow you to become more of a travelling family and easier to make memories with the whole group
I’m a solo traveller... will I meet other solo travellers?
Absolutely! The majority of our passengers are travelling solo. Kiwi Experience is a social experience guaranteed to leave with new friends from across the globe.
Am I too old/young for Kiwi Experience?
We welcome the young, and the young at heart aboard our buses, there is no upper limit! There is however a lower limit; you’ll need to be 18 at the time of travel.
What visas do I need?
Luckily, many nationalities are able to visit New Zealand for less than 3 months without a visa. However, if you are not from one of these countries, obtaining your own visa is your own responsibility. We ask that you check out the Immigration New Zealand website before booking your Kiwi Experience trip.
Do I need travel insurance?
While not mandatory, travel insurance is strongly recommended and should be taken out when travelling with us. As well as making sure your expensive stuff is covered, you should also get comprehensive travel insurance (covering all medical expenses you could incur while travelling).
How much should I budget for each day?
We recommend you budget between $80 - $100 per day to cover food and super fun times. From time to time, it may be worth putting a little more aside to pay for the really crazy stuff like skydiving.
How much luggage am I allowed to bring?
Passengers are allowed one 23kg suitcase/backpack and one day bag, as there are strict weight restrictions on our buses.
You're almost there! Simply click on the link we sent you to confirm your email address. Then your e-book will be on its way.
